5 AV Decisions That Are Much Harder to Fix After Construction

When planning a new building or renovating an existing space, audiovisual technology can sometimes feel like something that can be addressed later.

Choose the displays. Add some speakers. Install the microphones. Connect everything once construction is nearly complete.

In reality, some of the most important AV decisions need to happen long before equipment ever arrives on-site.

The physical environment has a major impact on how an AV system can be designed and installed. Waiting until walls are closed, ceilings are finished, and furniture is in place can turn relatively simple decisions into complicated—and potentially costly—changes.

Here are five AV considerations worth addressing early in the construction process.

1. Display Placement and Sightlines

Deciding where a display will go involves more than finding an open section of wall.

Room dimensions, seating arrangements, viewing distances, mounting heights, natural light, and how the space will be used all affect display placement.

A screen that looks perfectly positioned on an architectural drawing may not provide a clear view from every seat once furniture and other elements are added.

Early AV planning allows display size and placement to be coordinated with the entire room. It also ensures the necessary backing, power, pathways, and connections can be incorporated before the walls are finished.

Moving a display later isn’t always as simple as moving the mount.

2. Cable Pathways and Infrastructure

Much of a professional AV system is intentionally hidden.

Behind the walls, above the ceiling, and beneath the floor may be cabling connecting displays, microphones, speakers, cameras, control systems, equipment racks, and network infrastructure.

Those cables need somewhere to go.

Planning pathways early can make installation significantly cleaner and more efficient. Once construction is complete, adding new pathways may mean opening finished walls or ceilings, using surface-mounted solutions, or finding alternative routes that weren’t part of the original design.

The technology may be what users interact with, but the infrastructure supporting it is just as important.

3. Equipment Rack Location

The AV equipment rack might not be the most exciting part of a new space, but where it lives can have a major impact on the system.

Equipment requires adequate space, power, ventilation, accessibility, and connectivity. The rack also needs to be positioned with cable distances and future service in mind.

Trying to find space for AV equipment after mechanical rooms, storage areas, furniture, and other building systems have already claimed their territory can create unnecessary limitations.

Planning rack locations early gives AV equipment a proper home instead of forcing it into whatever space happens to be left.

4. Microphone, Speaker, and Camera Locations

Audio and video performance depend heavily on placement.

Microphones need appropriate coverage. Speakers need to distribute sound throughout the intended listening area. Cameras need useful sightlines to the people participating in a meeting, class, hearing, or presentation.

The architecture of the room affects all three.

Ceiling types, lighting fixtures, HVAC components, furniture, room dividers, and other building systems can compete for the same locations AV devices need.

Once everything is installed, there may be very little flexibility left.

Coordinating AV with the other trades during design helps ensure technology can be positioned based on performance—not simply wherever there happens to be room.

5. How the Space Will Actually Be Used

This may be the most important decision of all.

A room designed for presentations has different requirements than one designed for hybrid collaboration. A divisible event space may need multiple configurations. A classroom could support instruction, remote learning, guest speakers, and content sharing.

Those workflows affect almost every part of the AV system.

Instead of starting with a list of equipment, AV planning should start with questions:

Who will use this space?
What will they need to do here?
Where will people sit or move?
Will remote participants be involved?
Could the room’s purpose change in the future?

Answering those questions during design makes it much easier to build technology around the space instead of trying to adapt the space around technology later.

Early Coordination Creates Better AV

Professional AV isn’t separate from the environment around it.

Displays interact with architecture and lighting. Speakers and microphones interact with acoustics and ceilings. Equipment depends on power and network infrastructure. Cabling depends on pathways. Cameras depend on sightlines and furniture layouts.

That means AV decisions often overlap with the work of architects, engineers, contractors, IT teams, interior designers, and other trades.

The earlier those conversations happen, the more opportunities there are to coordinate everything intentionally.

And while AV systems can certainly be upgraded or modified after construction, it’s much easier to plan for the right infrastructure before the drywall goes up than to figure out how to work around it afterward.

Plan for the Technology Before You Need It

The best time to think about AV isn’t when construction is almost finished.

It’s when the space is still being planned.

Early AV involvement can help identify infrastructure requirements, coordinate equipment locations, account for how people will actually use the room, and reduce compromises later in the project.
